Background
My name is Rory Lilley, I am currently a senior in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Idaho and I am looking to graduate with my Bachelors Degree in the summer of 2013. I came to the Mechanical Engineering department at the university directly out of high school from my hometown in Northeastern Washington.
When I was in high school I always enjoyed the sciences specifically mathematics, and physics. I was enrolled in several Advanced Placement courses to further my learning in high school. The physics course that I was enrolled in gave me a great opportunity to apply physics concepts to the real world with the final project in the class. The final project was to design and build a trebuchet with a six foot throwing arm. This project really gave me the inspiration to go into mechanical engineering. Being able to design a machine on paper and then actually build the machine and see it work or fail, and then getting to step back and try to improve the design. But at the end of the day the best feeling this project allowed me to experience is being able to show off my projects and say, "I designed and built that" it is one of the best feelings.
